Six Turkish Bouquets Belonging to the Seventeenth Century

Hâlen İstanbul Üniversitesi Kütüphanesinde Türkçe Yazmalar arasında No. 9366 da kayıtlı Üçüncü Sultan Selim, Sultan Abdülaziz tuğralariyle Kütüphanei Mâbeyni Hümayun yazılı, tekrar Üçüncü Sultan Selim mühürlü, Hamdinin manzum olarak kaleme aldığı küçük kıtada Padişahların Tesaviri Osmaniye Albümü.
Albümde her nekadar Birinci Padişahtan zamanının son Padişahı Birinci Sultan Abdülhamid’e kadar resimler varsa da esas albüm İkinci Sultan Süleyman’ın 1099 (1087-88) de tahta çıkması şerefine ve sırf onun için hazırlanmıştır. Fakat yanlışlıkla bu albümü baştan itibaren Birinci Abdülhamid zamanında 1780 de hazırlanmış zannetmişlerdir [*]. İkinci Sultan Süleyman’dan itibaren Üçüncü Sultan Mustafa’ya kadar padişahlar Mustafa III. zamanında ilâve edilmiş ve eserin sonuna oğlu Üçüncü Sultan Selim ile resimleri bir ufak tablo halinde konmuştur. Son ilâve edilen padişahların arkalarında Garp usulünce hiç te güzel olmayan zaif, çirkin ve ruhsuz buketler yapılmıştır. Fakat ilk 12 padişahın resimleri arkasında çifter olarak yapılanlar XVII inci asrın harikûlâde nefis, ince, ve zarif hakikî Türk büketleridir.
Üçüncü Sultan Mehmed'e kadar olanlardan mevcud esas altı örnek asıllarına oldukça uygun renklerle basılarak buraya konmuştur. Bunlar sıra ile albümde:
1— Sultan Orhan ve Sultan Murad Hüdavendigâr Arkalarında gül büketi.
2— Sultan Yıldırım Beyazid ve Çelebi Sultan Mehmed
Arkalarında ufak güllü büket. 3— İkinci Sultan Murad ve Fatih Sultan Mehmed Arkalarında menekşe demeti. 4— İkinci Sultan Beyazid ve Yavuz Sultan Selim Arkalarında gül ve zambaklı büket. 5— Kanunî Sultan Süleyman ve İkinci Sultan Selim. Arkalarında zambak çiçeği. 6— Üçüncü Sultan Murad. ve Üçüncü Sultan Mehmed Arkalarında üç güllü büket.
yer almış bulunmaktadır.
Sonunda çocukluk resmi bulunan Üçüncü Sultan Selim bu albümü pek sevmiş ve asla yanından ayırmamıştır. Çünkü iki defa kendisine ayırdığı kitaplardan olduğu iki defa mührünü basmasından anlaşılmaktadır.
Bu çiçeklerin ressamının kim olduğunu anlamak kabil değildir. Muhakkak ki Topkapı Sarayı Nakışhanesinde 1099 (1687-1688) tarihinde hazırlanmıştır. Resimlerin arkasına son derecede ince ve itina ile yapılan bu büketlerin ressamı İstanbullu bir Türktür, O tarihde Topkapı Sarayı Ressamı Esseyyid Hüseyin’dir. Ya onun veya maiyyetinde bir sanatkârın olabilir. İmzası yok amma ruhundaki Türklük ince rûhî asaletini ve millî hüviyetini vermiştir. Bu da maksada kâfidir. Albümün diğer kısımları ve minyatürler ve büketler etrafında halkarî tezyinatı ve hükümdarlarımızı gösteren Türk minyatürleri ayrıca bir değer taşımaktadır. Her minyatürün üzerinde padişahlara münasib birer beyit ve kenarlarında manzum kısımlar vardır.
İşte çiçekleri ve büketleri noktasından çok ehemmiyetli olan bu albümdeki altı resim Santa Farma İlâç fabrikası tarafından bastırılmış ve tarafımızdan bu izahat ile birlikte ufak bir broşür halinde tekrar bastırılmıştır.

The albüm of «Tesaviri Osmaniye» (Pictures of Ottoman Sultans) which was written in verse by Hamdi and which includes the monogram of Sultan Selim the third and Sultan Abdülaziz, and also the seal of Sultan Selim the third and the phrase «Kütüphaneyi Mabeyni Hümayun» is at present recorded under n'umber 9366 in the Turkish Manuscripts section of the Library of İstanbul University.
Although the Album includes all the pictures belonging to the interval between the first sovereign and the Sultan Abdülhamid, the first main album was prepared in honour of Sultan Süleyman the second 1099 (1687-88) for the occasion of his accession to the throne. But by mistake it was thought that this album had been prepared in 1780 during the reign of Sultan Abdülhamid the first [*].
The sovereigns from Sultan Süleyman the second to Sultan Mustafa the third were added in the order of Mustafa III and at the end of the book there is the picture of the Sultan Mustafa the third with his son Selim the third, depicted like a tableau from nature. At the back of the lastly added pictures of sovereigns, were put thin, ugly and dull bouquets in the western style. But the ones made on the back of the first twelve pictures of sovereigns are real Turkish bouquets of rare beauty exquisiteness and charm, belonging to the seventeenth century.
Of the ones up to Sultan Mehmed the third, the six main motives have been printed in their original colours and have been put here. In the order in which they occur in the album they are:
1— Sultan Orhan and Sultan Murad, the first. At the back a bouquet of roses. 2— Sultan Yıldırım Beyazid and Çelebi Sultan Mehmed.
At the back of a bouquet of small roses. 3— Sultan Murad the second and Fatih Sultan Mehmed. At the back of a bouquet of violets. 4— Sultan Beyazid the second and Sultan Selim I. At the back a bouquet of roses and lilies. 5— Sultan Süleyman the magnificiant and Sultan Selim the second.

Sultan Selim, whose picture was put at the back of Ihe album, loved this album. He must have sorted it with his personal books two times for he has twice stamped it with his seal.
It is impossible to find out the artist who made these flowers. It is certain that the album was prepared in the Nakışhane (studio of fine arts of Topkapı palace) during the year 1099 (1687-88). The artist who painted these delicate bouquets at the back of the pictures is a Turk from İstanbul. At that date the artist of Topkapı palace was Esseyid Hüseyin. The flowers may have been made either by him or by one of his assistants. Although he did not sign them, his fine work reveals his nobility ol soul and his nationality. This is enough for us. The golden made designs around the miniatures and the bouquets and the Turkish miniatures of our sovereigns of a special value. Every miniature has an appropriate couplet above and some verses around it.
Six pictures of this album which is of a great importance from the point of view of its flowers and bouquets, have been printed by Santa Farma drug Factory. We have printed it again in the form of a small booklet including the above explanation.
